The Cerrado Mineiro region is in the northwest of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. It’s world-famous for producing high-quality coffee and became the first Protected Geographical Indication in Brazil in 2005, later gaining full Designation of Origin status in 2013.

One of the region’s main strengths is its clear seasonal pattern: a hot, rainy summer followed by a dry, mild winter. This dry weather during harvest is especially valuable because it prevents problems with humidity while the coffee is drying.

Minas Gerais is Brazil’s leading agricultural state, and the Cerrado is home to many of the country’s best-known coffee estates. Farmers here are highly skilled in every step of the process—planting, harvesting, drying, and sorting. Coffees from Cerrado are loved for their full body, rich chocolate flavours, and smooth, velvety texture, especially when pulled as espresso.

Today, about 4,500 farmers in the region produce around 6 million bags of coffee each year, averaging 35 bags per hectare. This success didn’t come easily. Farmers first moved to Cerrado in the 1970s after leaving Parana (because of frost) and São Paulo (because of nematodes). The soil they found in Cerrado was very acidic, but they corrected it with calcium, creating the fertile land that supports coffee production today.

Cerrado farms sit at elevations between 800 and 1,300 meters above sea level and are known for producing reliable, high-quality coffees with a consistent flavour profile. No matter the size of the farm, professionalism is a hallmark of producers in the region.

Entrepreneurship is in the farmers’ blood. Many are second- or third-generation growers. While every family’s story is unique, Cerrado as a whole is defined by its innovative and ambitious spirit.
